Historic triumph for Éire Óg!!!

A superb goal from Daniel Goulding eight minutes from time sparked off a scoring spree which saw Éire Óg overcome the challenge of Carrigaline in this exciting and entertaining AIB County Minor A football championship final which was played on Sunday 15th December 2002 in Brinny. It was their first county sucess in football in any grade.

Carrigaline opened the scoring with a pointed free  in the second minute.  Éire Óg got off the mark with a pointed free from Daniel Goulding in the 15th minute. This gave the Muskerry men the confidence they needed and they followed with points from Barry O'Neill and Eamonn Cantillon Murphy to lead 0-3 to 0-1 by the 20th minute. Carrigaline responded with points from Paul Holland, John Winters and Eoin O'Sullivan but Éire Óg finished the half on a high note to go in at the break leading 0-6 to 0-4 after points from Alan O'Sullivan (2) and Daniel Goulding (a free).

Two pointed frees from O'Sullivan in the 46th and 47th minute saw them gain equality when John Winters broke through for a goal for Carrigaline four minutes later, after a great passing movement. Éire Óg however, rose to the challenge and almost immediately were back on level terms when David Cronin, who had been moved to midfield with great sucess, embarked on a good run and fed Daniel Goulding, who did the rest with a powerful strike to the far corner of the net.

With Tony Dineen, Shane McCarthy, magnificent in defence, Donal O'Flynn and the aforementioned David Cronin in midfield increasing their efforts, they began to take control of the game and with the lethal scoring power of Barry O'Neill, Eamonn Cantillon Murphy, Fintan O'Toole, Alan O'Sullivan and Goulding, the scores began to follow.

Three points from O'Neill and one from Cantillon Murphy saw them race into a 1-10 to 1-6 lead with four minutes remaining. Carrigaline tried their best to stem the tide and were unlucky on a few occasions before Eoin O'Sullivan pulled back a point from a free. Éire Óg and Goulding had the last say when he was sent through by Fintan O'Toole to score the final point on the call of time to see his side victorious on the final scoreline of 1-11 to 1-7.
