Summer works

We had a busy summer in Ovens N.S. again this year, completing a number of projects.
• We converted a prefab area into a new learning support room.
• We floored and painted the drama room.
• We floored and re-organised the art room
• We painted the front wall of the school, the exterior wall to the left of the school as well as repainting or touching up hallways, classrooms, toilets, doors, doorways, etc.. all over the school.
• We installed yard games in the infants’ yard, 1st class yard and the 2nd/3rd class yards. Our thanks to the Parents’ Association for paying for the games on two of those yards, it’s very much appreciated.
• We did quite a lot of landscaping work around the grounds.
All of the above cost the school over €20,000. The €4,600 that the families who sponsored parents for running in the Marathon, last June, gave to the school, helped to alleviate those costs and we thank you for that – no money is wasted!

New Car Park

We began using our new staff car park the week before Christmas. There is enough room for 30+ cars and it is kerbed and surrounded by a lovely new fence for safety. The extra spaces created outside the school, thanks to our new car park, has alleviated the traffic/safety problems which we had previously. Thanks to everyone involved for providing Ovens N.S. with this excellent facility.

Our two new class rooms, toilets and storage rooms are completed and we moved into them today. We are delighted with these state of the art additions to our school. Our thanks to Joe Dilworth Builders and Denis O'Sullivan & Co. Engineers, for doing a great job. Thanks to the Board of Management, staff, pupils and parents of the school for your co-operation throughout the building process. Thanks to Finbarr O'Neill Ltd. for his generous contribution to the materials for our car park and to the community in general for their support and positivity.

Our Building is progressing well and the inside plastering has now been finished.

02/09/2015 - New rooms

As can be seen by the latest photographs, our new rooms are nearing completion. They have been roofed, plastered externally (internal work has begun), and doors / windows have been installed. We are still on schedule to move into these rooms after the mid term break.

Other Summer Works

We also completed works in the main school building. We painted two classrooms, which means that all of the main building has now been repainted in the last 3 years. We also took up all the old tiles in the hallways, wet areas of the classrooms and the halla of the main building and replaced them with a new marmoleum floor covering (see pictures). A big thank you to the Parents' Association for their very generous contribution towards the cost of the new floor and to all the parents who contributed to their fundraising during the year.

We are pleased to announce that the Department of Education has approved funding for the building of two new permanent classrooms in Ovens N.S. These rooms will be added on to the existing new building. At the moment we are in the process of tendering for architects/project managers.  We will keep you informed of our progress on this exciting project on a regular basis.

Summer 2014

We continued on our renovations of the main school building this summer in order to keep the appearance of our school up to a high standard. The main areas worked on were:

a) The two senior infants' rooms, a junior infants' room and a first class room were compeletely repainted.

b) Nine modern presses were installed in the wet areas of the classrooms.

c) We continued to paint the outside of the school - this summer we did the back and one of the sides.

We also did landscaping work, plumbing and electrical work during the summer. In all cases local tradesmen (parents of either current or past pupils) were used and we thank them for their wonderful work.

New Building

We moved into our lovely new building on the 30th September.  We started moving tables, chairs, books, charts, etc... first thing in the morning and had seven classes in new rooms by lunch time!

Well done to all the children for their great help, especially rang a sé. Thanks also to all the staff members, not alone for helping with the move but with their patience throughout the building process.  A special word of thanks to Gerry Dineen, John O’Riordan, Ger Corkery, Jerry Dineen, Finbarr Herlihy, Jerome Desmond, Jerry o’Leary and Derry Carroll who did a great job on the ‘heavy lifting’. As well as having lovely classrooms throughout the whole school, we also have our P.E. hall back, an art room, science room, drama/music room and will soon have a computer room reinstalled.  We also have excellent new and resurfaced play areas for the children. Thanks to Hurley and White Builders for the construction.  Thanks to the Board of Management, especially chairman Richard Nagle, for all their hard (voluntary) work.  Thank you to the parents for all your support during construction and well wishes since then.  Thanks to Fr. Ó hIcí for blessing the rooms and we hope to have an official opening in May to coincide with our Comenius week. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.

Update: 20th March 2013

Contracts with our builders were signed last week and construction on our new building began on Thursday, 14th March.  Our builders are Hurley and White from Dunmanway. We are delighted that they have begun construction and so far the weather has been very favourable for groundworks. Our completion date is the 7th of October. Please check the website for updates and photographs of progress.

Update: 4th February 2013

The tenders were opened last week and all going well contracts should be signed soon and construction will begin within the next few weeks.

Update: 21st November 2012

The tenders for our six room extension are due to be put on E-tenders on Nov 30th. All interested parties please note. If there is any change to this we will keep you informed.

Update: 21st September 2012

We received great news last week from the Cork County Council when we were told that our planning application has been accepted with no other conditions attached.

We received further positive news when the Department of Education and Science informed us that they have sanctioned a grant to cover the cost of our Wastewater/Sewage Treatment System.

The next step is to put our project out to tender on e-tenders, which will happen in the next couple of weeks. The tenders will be sent to our architects and remain sealed until the closing date, at which point they’ll be opened in the presence of the Board of Management and the best price will get the contract.

Update: 21st August 2012:

Unfortunately we’ve met with another delay with regards to our planning.  The main issue the County Council has with our application is that the roof is too high.  However, we’ve met with our architects and amended our plans. We also met with the Planners, who seem to be happy with this.  Hopefully, when this is finalised we won’t have any further delays.

We have had a busy summer in school doing such jobs as repairing the front wall, moving a resource prefab to make way for the new building, painting two classrooms and Alacoque’s office, uprooting shrubs and trees that were damaged and flooring the reception/offices area.  We’re also changing the external colours from green to red.

Update: 21st June 2012:

Our planning application has been lodged and a decision should be made on that by July 26th.

Fundraising:
Thank you to all the organisers, volunteers, staff and those who contributed in any way to our fundraising initiative recently.
So far we have collected over €27,000 which will be put to very good use.

Updates on new building

The County Council have come to a decision regarding the water treatment/sewage treatment plant for our school. We will have to decommission our current system and install a larger, more modern bio-system. We have written to the Department of Education and Skills regarding funding for this. We hope to have our plans lodged with the county Council in the next week to ten days and , all going well, planning should be granted before the end of August.

A meeting was held in Ovens NS about fundraising in relation to our new developments. A large crowd attended the meeting where everybody was briefed on upcoming developments i.e. the building of six new rooms and what this exciting project will mean for our school and parish. Each house in the parish is to be asked for a voluntary, anonymous donation and volunteers will call to all houses in our catchment area on the week beginning May 21st with envelopes for this purpose. These same volunteers will call to each house again on Tuesday May 29th to collect these envelopes.

Here is a copy of the plans for our new building.

The school community of Ovens NS are undertaking some ambitious projects which will benefit the children and community of Ovens parish for many years to come.We are extremely fortunate to have been granted permission/funding from the Department of Education and Skills to build five new classrooms.

These are in the design stage at the moment with RKD Architects who were granted the tender having undergone the rigorous procedures set out by the Department of Education and Skills. We hope to apply for planning permission in the near future, and all going to plan, should be able to advertise the job on e-tenders during the Summer. Construction should be under way soon after that and we hope to open the rooms for September 2013.

As this building will be constructed on the yard behind the school, we are in the process of ensuring that the children will continue to have ample hard surface playing area. With this in mind we have commenced work on our new yard. This work is being watched by the children with great excitement and anticipation.

There are exciting times ahead for Ovens National School. Please follow our progress in this section of the website where we will keep you updated on all developments as they occur.
