Sciath na Scol Double 2014

Our boys hurling team completed a Sciath na Scol double when they were crowned champions in Páirc Uí Rinn on the 29th May. They headed into the final on the back of some great performances in the group stage where they won all of their matches against Blarney, Coláiste Chríost Rí, Scoil Niocláis, G.S. Uí Ríordáin, G.S. and Carrigaline.

They came up against Riverstown National School of Glanmire on the day of the final. The boys put on a fantastic display of hurling to emerge victorious on a scoreline of 5-5 to 1-6. Thanks to their trainers Mr. Murphy, Mr. O’ Sulllivan and Mr. Loughlin for the time they put into training the team, and a huge congratulations to the boys involved.

Ovens N.S. Premier division Indoor Camogie Champions 2014

County Champions

Our 4th class Indoor Camogie team were crowned premier division champions of Cork on Wednesday last in Na Piarsaigh G.A.A. hall.  They had previously won the divisional final to qualify and their first game on the day was against Gaelscoil Uí Ríada, Bishopstown.  Bhíodar ar fheabas ar fad sa chluiche seo agus bhuadar 8-0! In the final they faced Riverstown N.S., Glamire.  After a hard fought encounter, our girls emerged 4-1 winners. This was a great achievement for the girls and a first for the school.

Panel: Eimear O’Donovan, Aoibhin Goulding, Caoimhe Gleeson, Niamh Herlihy, Emily Coffey, Aisling Desmond, Patrice Holmes, Emma O’Regan, Abbie Coughlan and Eimear Muprhy.

The Boys

The boys also won their divisional final to qualify for the County finals.  In their first game the boys played brilliantly but just lost out 3-1 to St. Anthony’s and in their second game, despite putting in a huge effort, they lost to Riverstown 5-2.  The boys were also playing in the premier division so it was a great achievement to qualify for the County – maith sibh a bhuachaillí.

Panel: Adam McCarthy, Darragh Coakley, Diarmuid Dillon, Brannon Bradley, Adam Dennehy, Darragh O’Connell, Séamus Lordan, Conor Higgins, Michael McCarthy, Ronan O’Driscoll.

 Indoor Camogie - February 2014

We are delighted to announce that our fourth class girls won the indoor camogie divisional championship on February 6th. They really deserve their victory as they had trained very hard during their lunchtimes since returning to school after Christmas. Our girls scored 25 goals in their four games, only conceded 2, and all members of the panel really played their part. Táimid ana bhródúil as an gaisce a dhein sibh a cháilíní!

We encourage the children to take part in as many sports as possible
and we co-operate fully with the local sports clubs in their efforts
to promote sports for children.

We take the children training after school if the weather is favourable and we enter
the Sciath na Scol competitions for Hurling, Camogie and Football (Boys and Girls)
in which we have won many cups, trophies and medals over the years.

We take part in the Cork City Sports every year and in recent years
we have won numerous medals and trophies.

For the past number of years we have organised specialised coaches for
various age groups in rugby, pitch and putt, soccer and tennis.
This coaching takes place during the normal school P.E. time.

Our school is well equipped for sports and we have a wide variety of
sports equipment available in the school. We also have a
school hall, a large outdoor area for games and an all-weather pitch is
available in the adjacent Éire Óg GAA facility. Our thanks to
Éire Óg GAA club for allowing us to use their pitches for
training and playing school matches and to the parents
who help us to take the children to matches.
